Stout is not really what most people think of when they picture American beers. For those unacquainted with the craft beer industry, the image that comes first to mind is probably one of those watered down options from the Big Three. Even for those who have experienced a little of the craft brew industry, stout probably isn't one of the first things that springs to mind. However, this style is making inroads in the States, and you'll find some extraordinary options from American craft breweries. What options are worth exploring?
Moylan's Imperial Stout - If you're looking for a chocolate stout with some sweetness to it, this is one of your best bets. Moylan's offers espresso flavors, fused with a bit of mocha and some nuttiness. You'll find this beer bottled in California, and it might be a little hard to find in some outlying areas.
Ipswich Oatmeal Stout - If you prefer oatmeal stout, then you'll find that this Massachusetts brew will satisfy. Thick and black, this beer offers mocha and fudge overtones, as well as maple syrup and oatmeal flavors.
Alaskan Oatmeal Stout - Hailing from the farthest north in the US, this beer offers mocha, honey, oatmeal and ash. This is a great option for those cold winter nights, but also pairs well with meat or poultry, and works well as a dessert all on its own.
Bear Republic Black Bear Imperial Stout - As you might have guessed, this beer hails from California, and offers an interesting mixture of both cream and imperial characteristics. Cocoa, toffee, and nutty flavors round out this tasty offering.
Left Hand Fade to Black Export Marko Stout - From Colorado, this beer offers some interesting flavors. Of course, the name alone might be worth the purchase, but you'll also enjoy molasses, cherry, mocha and some spiciness, as well.
Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout - Despite the rather odd sounding name, this is a great brew. As you might have surmised, this is a milk stout, so you'll definitely find some lactic overtones to the brew. You'll also find coffee and walnut flavors, as well.
Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout - No list of American stouts would be complete without an entry from Dogfish Head. If you want a hefty Imperial stout (18% ABV), then this is the drink for you. You'll find a tremendous amount of barley, as well as honey and cherry.
There are tons of other amazing stouts out there - what's available in your neck of the woods?
