Microsoft is still reported to be working on the Surface Phone, but the handset’s arrival is said to be getting a massive push back. Several months of Surface Phone rumors continue to go strong. Only now the launch of the ultimate Windows 10 smartphone could be set back as far as 2019. The state of the Windows 10 platform on mobile is cited as the greatest reason behind the delay. Now another device is said to be coming out in the Surface Phone’s stead. While the gadget’s name is still in the wind, it is expected to be the latest addition to the Lumia smartphone lineup.
The excitement behind the Surface Phone continues to surge, although the year is likely to end without the device’s launch. Since the rumors began, Microsoft has shied away from making official comments about the device. This has left fans and analysts with no choice but to speculate its development, specs and likely release date. We now hear of a likely delay that could see the Surface Phone roll out as late as 2019. A new Lumia handset could likely show up in 2017.
The Lumia handsets that were taken off Nokia’s hands a while ago are thought to be on their way out. The acquisition has often been referred to as multi-billion dollar write-off for Microsoft. The Windows operating system as a mobile platform took its time to take off, but never did. Under MSFT, the phone line was held back by a lack of innovative services and popular apps. This rendered the already struggling Windows Phone range unfavorable among tech consumers. Microsoft’s smartphone business subsequently fell into the shadows, doomed to be taken back to the drawing board and re-approached.
“We will continue to be in the phone market, not as defined by today’s market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device. We don’t want to be driven buy just envy of what others have,” Nadella tells AFR. “What can we bring? That’s where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI.”
Speculation hints at the Surface Phone being a unique, multi-use device with desktop-level processing power. The device could revive the QWERTY keyboard or make use of a foldout pad much like the Surface Pro series. The device is bound to be a Windows Phone, too. It should offer the latest and most innovative use of the Windows 10 Mobile OS.
The Elite x3 from HP is thought to be a massive hint at where Microsoft plans to take its next handset. HP’s device is a Windows phone, too, and comes as a near-perfect example of a smartphone with a PC-like capacity. Devices produced by MSFT’s leading partners paint a good idea of Satya Nadella’s mobile ambitions.
There are very few people who would contest the fact that Microsoft is among the very best software and digital services companies worldwide. When it comes to user interfaces and operating systems, the American tech firm is no where near out its depth. It is unfortunate though, that we can create an long list of Microsoft-related achievements, only to hit a screeching halt when it comes to smartphones. Many Microsoft fans believe the upcoming Surface Phone can turn all this around for the Windows maker. However, does the device truly have a shot at success as a Windows phone?Read More...
