Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, was seeking access to the Kremlin when he met in December with a Russian banker who had ties to President Vladimir Putin. Investigators want to know why.
Current and former American officials say the meeting may have been part of efforts to establish a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and Moscow.
The White House spent the weekend working on a response to the news, which is testing Mr. Kushner’s role in the administration. The president praised Mr. Kushner in a statement, saying “Jared is doing a great job for the country.”
He did not join leaders of the other Group of 7 countries in reaffirming a commitment to cut greenhouse-gas emissions, ending his nine-day trip overseas on a contentious note.
After the meeting, a disappointed Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany said that Europe should pay more attention to its own interests and “take our fate into our own hands.”
