INTERNATIONAL celebrities such as the actor who plays Marvel’s Hulk on the big screen will help galvanise people around the world to help protect the Great Barrier Reef.
The Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef program is set to go global in June, rolling out several initiatives to motivate people to take more action to help make the Reef strong and more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
It comes as scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies will take to the air tomorrow to survey coral reefs for further signs of bleaching.
Authorities have confirmed a mass bleaching event has occurred along a 300km section of the coastline, between Cairns and Townsville, affecting several tourism hot spots.
Citizens of the GBR chairman Alex de Waal said the program would convert global interest in the Reef into action that would make a significant difference to the long-term sustainability of the natural wonder.
So far more than 2000 people have pre-registered as Reef citizens.
“We will create a clear picture of what the current (bleaching) situation is and what is being done,” Mr de Waal said.
“There is a plethora of stuff being done to support the welfare of the Great Barrier Reef.
